Becoming Q&A · Replay

Step inside Becoming with me.

I opened up the course and the call calendar and answered your questions live. Watch it here, and everything you need to decide is right below.

Your daughter isn't responding to what you say. She's responding to how it feels to be near you.

Whether she's at your table every Sunday and it still feels careful, or she's asked for space and you're trying to honor it, Becoming is six months of high-touch coaching with Hilary Mae, in a small group of fewer than twelve women, to see what's really been happening between you and learn how to lead the connection, bringing her closer without abandoning yourself. Join today and you're in right away, with the course, the call calendar and your first call with Hilary within days.

Included this season

This season, Becoming includes Home for the Holidays.

For six weeks, November 10 through December 22, we focus on the season ahead. Wherever you are with her right now, we'll meet you there.

If there's silence

We'll help you hold yourself through it, and we'll be there for you while you do.

If you're not sure

Whether to invite her, whether you'll be invited, or whether to do your own thing this year, we'll help you find your answer with clarity instead of fear.

If it's tense and you'll be together

We'll help you see what's in the way, so you don't just respond differently in the moment. You'll be different before you ever walk through the door.

You don't wait for it. Your Becoming starts the day you join, with the course and the coaching calls right away, and Home for the Holidays begins inside it on November 10. When the season is over, you keep going with the full six months.

A $1,350 value, yours as part of Becoming.

Take your time.

Every one of these has a pattern underneath it. It isn't a flaw in you and it isn't proof that she doesn't love you. It's a dynamic that was built over years, often before either of you had words for it.

Patterns can be seen. And once you can see yours, you can change what it feels like to be with you.

Wherever you are with her

You don't have to be estranged to belong in this room.

She's at your table every Sunday, and it's warm, and it's careful. You choose your words. You wait for her to bring things up. You love her, and you know it could be easier.

She calls when she needs something, and the rest of the time it's quiet. You can't remember the last conversation that wasn't about logistics.

Something happened, a wedding, a holiday, a move, a sentence neither of you has taken back, and since then it's been polite. Not broken. Just not what it was.

She's asked for space, and you're trying to respect it while your heart is doing something else entirely.

What connects the women inside Becoming isn't how close or how far she is. It's that they've decided to be the one who leads.

A different kind of leadership

You've been the one who holds it together.

You see what needs to happen, so you handle it. You can see where she's headed, so you say something. You can make it easier for her, so you do. You've carried this family's feelings for so long that you don't notice you're doing it anymore.

And the very things that made you a devoted mother can land as something else entirely with a grown daughter. Help can feel like doubt. Protection can feel like control. A caring question can feel like an inspection.

That isn't a failure of love. It's the gap between what you mean and what she receives, and it's one of the most learnable things in the world.

If she has pulled away

She didn't pull away because she stopped loving you.

She pulled away because the closeness she was experiencing didn't feel safe enough yet to stay in.

Not all at once. One conversation at a time. She noticed when her honesty created tension she didn't know how to hold. She learned that sharing something hard meant managing your reaction alongside her own pain. So she started editing herself. Keeping things surface level. Limiting how long she stayed.

She wasn't punishing you. She was protecting herself from a relationship that kept costing her more than it gave.

And she is still there. Still watching. Waiting to feel something different when she is with you.

That is what Becoming changes. Not what you say to her. What it feels like to be near you.

What's really happening

The distance isn't a verdict on your love.

You've done so much of the work already. You've read the books. Maybe you've been in therapy for years. You've tried to do it differently than it was done for you. And she still feels far away.

Here is what most mothers haven't been told. It lives in the tone under the words. The worry she can sense. The old roles you both fall into the moment you're in the same room.

You were a daughter first. So much of what's happening between you and her traces back to what happened between you and your own mother. When you see that clearly, the guilt loosens. And what's left is something you can actually work with.

That is where Becoming begins. Not with your daughter, but with you.

Becoming is where you learn to see the pattern, and become the mother she can come home to.

“It isn't about what actually happened. It is about her feelings about what she perceived to have happened. Those feelings have to be recognized in order for her to heal.”Becoming member

Module 6 · Healing Communication

The Hear Her Framework™

Not because you agree with everything she says. Because she needs to feel heard before she can feel close.

Hilary arranging tulips

Most mothers are listening. But they are listening to respond. To fix, to clarify, to explain their side.

The Hear Her Framework™ teaches a different kind of listening. One that creates emotional safety before a single word of repair is spoken.

When your daughter feels genuinely heard, not corrected, not redirected, not soothed with solutions, her nervous system settles. Her defenses soften. And the conversation that has been impossible for years becomes possible.

That is what Module 6 teaches. And it is one of the things Becoming members say changed everything.

Inside Becoming

Everything you need, for six full months.

Every piece is built so you're never guessing at your next step and never carrying this alone.

For years I sat with mothers and daughters together, hearing both sides of the same conversation. Becoming is that private work, made into a path you can walk with me. You move through the lessons and workbooks at your own pace, and this is often where the shift begins. Women tell me they watch a lesson and something falls into place. It finally makes sense. They can see what's really been happening between them, and the things their daughter tried to tell them years ago that they weren't yet able to hear. Once they see it, they can't unsee it.

Then on our coaching calls, you bring what you're discovering to me. Sometimes it's a text she sent last night. Sometimes it's something you realized in a lesson and want to understand more deeply. Either way, we talk it through together and find what it means for your relationship right now.

How I guide you

I read what she actually wrote.

Sometimes a text that feels cold has warmth all through it, right down to the heart at the end. Sometimes a short reply is an open door. We look at it together before you decide what it means.

I ask the question underneath your question.

When she pulls away, what story are you telling yourself about what it means about you as a mother? That story is often running the relationship more than she is.

I help you see what she may be asking for.

A correction about lunch is often about something much older than lunch. "You're an adult, you decide" can sound like you don't care. We find the words that say what you actually mean.

I shape the words with you before you send them.

A letter that names one moment, what you can see now and what you would do differently, without a single justification. Some go through four drafts. That's the point.

The Becoming Course

8 modules · 57 lessons · the complete workbook · yours for life

Everything Hilary walks a private client through, organized into lessons you work through at your own pace. You'll understand what has really happened between you, what's yours to carry and what's hers, what happens in her body when things get tense, how to listen so she feels heard, how to have the hard conversation and how to repair when something goes sideways. You bring what you discover to the calls, and you work with it together.

Every lesson has its workbook pages, and you'll have the complete Becoming workbook, with every module, insert and bonus lesson, in one place.

Live Coaching with Hilary

4 calls a month · small groups · on Zoom

We meet four times a month on Zoom, in small groups, always fewer than twelve women. Every woman on the call gets a turn with Hilary, every time. Bring the visit that's coming up, the conversation that went wrong, the silence you don't know how to read.

Calls rotate between Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at different times each week, so there's always one that fits your schedule and time zone, and you'll have the schedule at least two months in advance. And over six months, Hilary gets to know your relationship. She remembers your daughter, your history and what you tried last time, so the guidance builds on itself.

Before each call, send in your question, a text thread or the letter you're drafting. Hilary reads it with you live and helps you find words that feel different from anything you've said before. Some letters go through four drafts before they're ready. That's the point.

iii.

Communication Reviews

On every coaching call

Bring your real messages to any coaching call. A text thread, an email, the letter you’re drafting or notes from a phone call. Hilary reviews it with you live, helps you decode what she’s really saying and plans your next response with you, so you walk into the next conversation steady instead of bracing for it.

iv.

The women walking beside you

For all six months

You're not only getting guidance on your own relationship. You're learning from every woman in the room, from the questions she asks, the situations she's navigating and what she's trying with her own daughter.

Some women will be a few steps behind you, and some will be a few steps ahead. Watching how things have changed for the women ahead of you is often what makes it possible to believe it can change for you too.

Real moments from inside the room

What women discover inside Becoming.

From reading coldness into every short textTo seeing the warmth that was there all along, right down to “I love you guys too” with a heart.
From fifteen years of fixing, explaining and defendingTo a letter that names exactly what she would do differently now, without a single justification.
From telling her daughter “you're an adult, you can decide”To “I trust you, and whatever you choose, I'm behind you.”
From initiating every hard conversation herselfTo letting her daughter lead, and a Sunday dinner that was warm in both directions.
From answering the grown woman in front of herTo understanding she needed to respond to the young daughter inside her.
From silence when relatives criticized her daughterTo “I will always stand up as her mother.”
Real mothers, real shifts

What changes when you change.

“I have learned to stop ruminating and worrying constantly about the relationship with her. The guilt and grief were extreme for me. I am now doing a lot better with this and owning my part and not hers. I sent her a letter and she accepted and read it.”
Becoming memberShe joined after six months without seeing her daughter, with only short texts between them. Now they're talking on the phone, and she's learning to listen and hold space without over-apologizing or over-explaining.
Seven years of silence

Then one day, they met for lunch.

Carolyn hadn't seen her eldest daughter in seven years. Seven years of missed birthdays. Seven years of wondering if she would even recognize her on the street.

Inside Becoming, she began to see how her own upbringing, her divorce and the pain she had never processed had shaped the way she mothered. Not with bad intentions. With blind spots. She wrote a letter that named the impact instead of explaining it, and she didn't ask for a response.

At first there was silence. Then her daughter unblocked her. Family shared that the letter had landed well. This is where most mothers panic. She didn't. She stayed steady, gave space and trusted the timing.

Then one day, they met for lunch. They hugged. They talked for over an hour and a half. Her daughter said they would need to take it slowly, and Carolyn respected that completely.

Today they are rebuilding. Not perfectly. Consciously.

Carolyn's Becoming story CarolynWatch her story
Blocked for a year and a half

Then a handwritten letter arrived.

Her daughter had blocked her completely. No calls, no texts, no time with her grandchildren. In Becoming, Debby saw that she had focused on being right instead of being attuned. So she wrote gentle letters. Not to argue or explain. Just to share what she was learning. Two months in, she learned her daughter had read one. Soon after, a handwritten letter arrived, thanking her for the space and asking to begin again, slowly.

Not because her daughter changed first. Because she did.

Almost two years without her voice

On Christmas Day, a voice message.

For almost two years they had only exchanged carefully written letters, if anything. She began sending thoughtful, steady messages. No flooding, no guilt, no pressure. After months, her daughter shared the pain she had been carrying and said she could see a shift in her mother. Then on Christmas Day: “I was thinking about you today.”

Now they send voice messages back and forth. And it was her daughter who had recommended Becoming in the first place.

After both daughters cut contact

One week in, her daughter reached out.

Because of what she was already learning, she didn't rush in. She responded slowly and thoughtfully and didn't ask her daughter to explain what went wrong. She brought each message to the group and got clear guidance on how to answer.

Four months later, they're in regular contact. Because they both want to be.

Years of tension with her eldest

She stopped asking who was right.

Instead of insisting her daughter's view was wrong, she began asking a different question. What happened, that she sees it this way? She wrote a note with no pressure and no demands. Her daughter answered honestly.

Their connection is growing. And she's growing with it.

In their own words

Messages from women inside Becoming

Through the Becoming program, I've come to realize that my behavior patterns played a role in my daughter's estrangement from me. After creating a timeline of our relationship, I can clearly identify instances where I may have unintentionally caused her pain. I am ready to take responsibility for those moments.

Internally, I feel ready to lead this repair. Externally, I have gained more confidence in myself. A shift has definitely occurred within me.

Karen, after six months inside Becoming

I get so much out of the Zoom calls with everyone. It is truly such a special group of women, and you do such a terrific job of leading these calls and guiding everyone.

Karen

As one of the original members of this group, I guess we are “graduating” in a couple of days. I feel that the changes I have experienced are real and life changing, with more than just my mother-daughter relationship. To those of you who are just beginning, I say trust Hilary and trust the process. Keep the hope and find joy in the smallest successes.

A Becoming graduate, to the women just beginning

I was talking to an adult, and she was talking to a parent. I needed to respond to the young her, not the forty year old in front of me. I see why I needed to sit with this for a while, get some help from Becoming, then respond from a healthier perspective rather than a hurt place.

Becoming member, after her first real conversation with her daughter

I love how you give people the words to describe what's happening and what they're feeling. And the understanding of what our daughters may be feeling when they are talking to us. The information in the modules is gold.

Becoming member

Before Becoming, the relationship between my daughter and I was a rollercoaster of emotions, no boundaries, and eventually became no contact. The program allowed me to work through it at my own pace and develop a relationship with myself and my own self-talk. It really teaches you to let go of what was and shows you what can be. There is hope and love in all things we do in this program.

a letter from Hilary

The day my daughter slammed the door.

When I was growing up, a slammed door was practically the worst thing you could do in our house. It meant disrespect. It meant you had gone too far. Nobody ever had to explain that to me. I just knew.

Years later, my own daughter slammed her bedroom door. Before I had a single conscious thought, my body was already on its way up the stairs. My heart was pounding. My jaw was tight. I had the words ready, and they weren't even mine.

I stopped before the top step. I let the door be her anger. I let my own room be the place I found my calm. And when we were both ready, I went back and knocked.

That moment holds everything I teach. Not because I got it right. Because I finally saw it. The invisible pattern that had been handed to me, running in my body, about to be handed to her.

Here is what I see, over and over. None of it was taught on purpose. All of it was taught. How you handle conflict. How you receive hard feelings. Whether honesty feels safe. Your daughter learned it by watching you, the way you learned it by watching your mother.

I've been a licensed counselor for 17 years, and for the last six I've given my work entirely to this one relationship. I've sat with hundreds of women carrying the same quiet ache. They love their daughters completely. They've tried everything they know. And they still can't get past the wall. And what I’ve come to understand is that they aren't missing the right words. They're living inside a pattern they can't see yet.

Once you can see it, things begin to change, not overnight and not in a straight line, but in a way you can feel. The letter you write reads differently, the phone call sounds different, and your daughter feels it too, because it really is different to be with you.

That's why I created Becoming. So you don't have to carry this alone, late at night, rereading her last text, trying to understand what you missed. So someone who knows your story, call after call, can help you see what you can't see from inside it.

You are not the last link in the chain. You are the first author.

Meet your guide

Hilary Mae

Hilary Mae is a mother-daughter relationship coach. A licensed counselor for 17 years, she now works with women as a coach, and for the last six years she has devoted her work entirely to the relationship between mothers and daughters. She is the founder of The Mother-Daughter Company and has taught more than 12,000 students, and in 2024 she taught the first-ever course on the mother-daughter relationship at the Psychotherapy Networker Symposium. Her work has been featured in Business Insider, Vox and Everymom, she coached a mother and daughter on a popular series on Hulu, and she is currently writing a book on the mother-daughter relationship.

After years in practice, she kept seeing the same thing. Families were being told to give each other space, to wait it out, to simply move on, when what was actually keeping them apart was a set of patterns neither woman could see from inside the relationship. Patterns that had been handed down through generations of women who came before them.

That understanding became the foundation of her work and of the frameworks she has built to guide it, including the Mother-Daughter Reconnection Method™, the Hear Her Framework™ and the Emotional Repair Pathway™.

Hilary is known for helping mothers see what has been happening beneath the surface of their relationship in a way that finally makes sense, without blame and without shame, and for giving them the words and the steadiness to begin again. She brings that into Becoming herself on every call, getting to know each woman's relationship so the guidance grows with her over time.

She is a daughter and the mother of a daughter, and she understands from both sides how much this relationship holds.

How does Home for the Holidays work inside Becoming?

For six weeks, November 10 through December 22, our coaching focuses on the season ahead, wherever you are with her. Silence, uncertainty about who's invited, or a table you'll be sharing when things feel tense. You'll come into the holidays with a plan and with support, and when the season is over, you keep going with the full six months of Becoming.

Home for the Holidays is included, along with every other live program Hilary teaches while you're inside.

What else is included while I'm inside?

Every live program Hilary teaches during your six months, with a front row seat. This season that includes Home for the Holidays ($1,350), and it includes Becoming Foundations when it runs live and anything new she creates. You don't sign up for anything. You're automatically in.

What's the difference between Becoming and VIP?

Both paths give you the complete Becoming experience. All eight modules and the complete workbook, four coaching calls a month, Communication Reviews, every live program Hilary teaches and the Becoming community for six full months.

VIP adds Hilary's eyes directly on your relationship. You begin with a private deep-dive session where you share your full story. The history, the conversations, the places you keep getting stuck. Hilary synthesizes everything she sees into your personalized Relationship Blueprint™, and then you have three private one-on-one calls to put it into practice.

If you want the teachings and the group, Becoming is your path. If you want Hilary to know your relationship specifically and guide you through it personally, VIP is where that happens.

What if my relationship is already pretty good?

Then this is the best time to do this work. Not in a crisis, when everything feels urgent and every word is a risk, but now, while there's room. Many of the women inside Becoming see their daughters regularly. They joined because they knew it could be closer, and they'd rather do something about it than wait.

What if my daughter won't talk to me?

You do not need your daughter to participate for this work to change things between you. When one woman in a relationship begins to understand the invisible dynamics running underneath it, the relationship begins to shift. Not because the other woman changed. Because the dynamic changed.

Your daughter doesn't need to be ready. You do.

We're in contact, but it's tense. Is this for me?

Yes. Becoming is for every stage of distance, from tense and surface-level to complete silence. The work is the same regardless of where the relationship is right now.

Does my daughter need to join with me?

No. Becoming is designed for one woman to go through on her own. The shifts you make will be felt in the relationship whether or not your daughter is doing any work herself.

I'm already in therapy. Will this overlap?

Becoming is not therapy. It is coaching and education. Many members are in therapy alongside Becoming and find the two complement each other. If you have a question about whether both are right for you at the same time, write to hello@hilarymae.com.

Is it only for mothers of adult daughters?

No. Becoming is for mothers of daughters at any age, from the teen years to grown daughters with families of their own. The patterns underneath the relationship are the same, and the earlier you see them, the more you can change.

What if I don't finish the lessons in six months?

Most women don't, and that's fine. The lessons are yours for life, so you can keep returning to them. If you'd like to stay in the coaching calls after your six months, you can continue as a Becoming alumna.

When does it start?

Your six months begin the day you join, with full access to the teachings, the call calendar and the coaching calls right away. Most women are on a call with Hilary within days. Home for the Holidays runs November 10 through December 22 inside Becoming, but you don't wait for it to begin. Enrollment is open now.

When are the coaching calls?

Four times a month. Calls rotate between Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at different times each week, so there is always one that fits your schedule and time zone. You'll receive the schedule at least two months in advance.

Every call is recorded and available to members the same day. If you can’t make it live, submit your question ahead of time and Hilary will answer it on the call.

What if I can't make the live calls?

Every call is recorded and available to members the same day. Submit your question ahead of time and Hilary will answer it on the call, so you still get coached even when life gets in the way.

Can I reach Hilary between calls?

The calls are where your support happens. Bring everything there, or send your question ahead and Hilary will answer it on the call. With four calls a month, you're never waiting long.

What makes the difference for the women who change the most?

They do the work. Not perfectly, and not every week, but seriously. They watch the lessons, use the workbook, come to the calls and bring what they're noticing. When something doesn't work, they tell Hilary and find a new approach together. That's what Becoming is built for.

What happens on a coaching call?

You bring whatever is live for you. A text you do not know how to answer, a visit that is coming up, a conversation that went wrong. Hilary coaches you personally. In a group of fewer than twelve women, there is always time for your situation.

A note before you join

It only takes one person to change a dynamic. If you feel called to this work, you get to be that person, and it gets to begin with you.

Becoming is coaching and education, not therapy, and it isn't a substitute for clinical care. If your daughter is in an active mental health crisis, struggling with addiction or in a situation that needs clinical support, write to hello@hilarymae.com first and Hilary will help you find the right place to start.

If you feel the quiet pull, this is your Becoming.

If you're reading this, you already know you want something different. That isn't an accident. That's readiness.

I've been doing this for 17 years. The women who show up, do the work and bring it to the calls don't leave the same. The thread has been there all along. Let's pick it up together.
