She doesn't come back because you found the right words. She comes back because it feels different to be with you.
For the mother who has tried everything she knows and still feels a wall between her and her daughter. Becoming is six months of teaching, weekly small-group coaching and real-time guidance with Hilary Mae, so that wall finally has somewhere to go.
Hear from Hilary how Becoming works, and whether it's right for you.
Tap the ones that feel true.
Take your time.
Every one of these has a pattern underneath it. It isn't a flaw in you and it isn't proof that she doesn't love you. It's a dynamic that was built over years, often before either of you had words for it.
Patterns can be seen. And once you can see yours, you can change what it feels like to be with you.
You reread a text to her three times before you send it. You still aren't sure how it will land.
The Invisible Translator™
She doesn't receive what you send. She receives what she translates it into, through her own history, her own fears, her own meaning-making. And you are doing the same with hers. There is a name for what is happening in that gap. And once you can see it, the whole dynamic shifts.
You've apologized. It didn't seem to count.
Intention vs. Impact™
Your intention was love. But something has to happen before an apology can land, and most mothers have never been told what it is. Inside Becoming, this is one of the first things we look at together.
You find out about her life from a photo online or from someone else.
The Flow of Care™
She didn't stop sharing because she stopped loving you. She stopped because sharing started to cost her something. Understanding what that cost is, and how it built over time, is where the door back to her begins to open.
A visit ends and you replay the one moment that went sideways for days.
The Story You Tell Yourself™
What happened in that moment is only part of it. What you decide it means about her, about you and about where this is going is running the relationship more than the moment itself ever did. That story is workable. But first you have to see it clearly.
Someone told you to give her space. You've been waiting a long time.
Relationship Seasons™
Giving space is not the same as understanding what this season of your relationship is actually asking of you. There is a difference between waiting and preparing. The mothers who reconnect know the difference.
You can't remember the last time a conversation with her felt easy.
Depth vs. Ease™
What feels like connection to you may not feel like connection to her. And what she needs to feel close may be something you have never been shown. This is not a compatibility problem. It is a visibility problem, and it is one of the most solvable ones inside Becoming.
Every one of these has a name. A pattern. A path through.
That is what Becoming teaches you to see.
Join Becoming →She didn't pull away because she stopped loving you.
She pulled away because the closeness she was experiencing didn't feel safe enough yet to stay in.
Not all at once. One conversation at a time. She noticed when her honesty created tension she didn't know how to hold. She learned that sharing something hard meant managing your reaction alongside her own pain. So she started editing herself. Keeping things surface level. Limiting how long she stayed.
She wasn't punishing you. She was protecting herself from a relationship that kept costing her more than it gave.
And she is still there. Still watching. Waiting to feel something different when she is with you.
That is what Becoming changes. Not what you say to her. What it feels like to be near you.
“Your daughter isn't responding to what you say. She's responding to how it feels to be near you.”
The distance isn't a verdict on your love.
You've done so much of the work already. You've read the books. Maybe you've been in therapy for years. You've tried to do it differently than it was done for you. And she still feels far away.
Here is what most mothers haven't been told. It lives in the tone under the words. The worry she can sense. The old roles you both fall into the moment you're in the same room.
You were a daughter first. So much of what's happening between you and her traces back to what happened between you and your own mother. When you see that clearly, the guilt loosens. And what's left is something you can actually work with.
That is where Becoming begins. Not with your daughter, but with you.
Becoming is where you learn to see the pattern, and become the mother she can come home to.
“It isn't about what actually happened. It is about her feelings about what she perceived to have happened. Those feelings have to be recognized in order for her to heal.”Becoming member
The Hear Her Framework™
Not because you agree with everything she says. Because she needs to feel heard before she can feel close.
Most mothers are listening. But they are listening to respond. To fix, to clarify, to explain their side.
The Hear Her Framework™ teaches a different kind of listening. One that creates emotional safety before a single word of repair is spoken.
When your daughter feels genuinely heard, not corrected, not redirected, not soothed with solutions, her nervous system settles. Her defenses soften. And the conversation that has been impossible for years becomes possible.
That is what Module 6 teaches. And it is one of the things Becoming members say changed everything.
Everything you need, for six full months.
Every piece is built so you're never guessing at your next step and never carrying this alone.
The Golden Thread Teachings
8 modules · 50+ lessons · yours for lifeThe frameworks Hilary has built across 17 years of clinical work. You'll learn what your daughter needs from you, what happens in her body when things get tense, and how to open a door she can actually walk through.
Live Coaching with Hilary
Weekly · small groups · on ZoomWe meet every week on Zoom, in small groups, usually fewer than twelve women. You can be coached personally on every call you join. Bring the visit that's coming up, the conversation that went wrong, the silence you don't know how to read.
Calls rotate between Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at different times each week, so there's always one that fits your schedule and time zone. And over six months, Hilary gets to know your relationship. She remembers your daughter, your history and what you tried last time, so the guidance builds on itself.
Before each call, send in your question, a text thread or the letter you're drafting. Hilary reads it with you live and helps you find words that feel different from anything you've said before. Some letters go through four drafts before they're ready. That's the point.
Communication Reviews
On every weekly callBring your real messages to any coaching call. A text thread, an email, the letter you’re drafting or notes from a phone call. Hilary reviews it with you live, helps you decode what she’s really saying and plans your next response with you, so you walk into the next conversation steady instead of bracing for it.
Your Relationship Blueprint™ and private calls

Not a perfect mother. A steady one.
This isn't about getting her to change. It's about you becoming the woman who can hold this relationship with clarity and softness, whatever she does next.
“You’re not waiting. You’re preparing.”
What changes when you change.
“I have learned to stop ruminating and worrying constantly about the relationship with her. The guilt and grief were extreme for me. I am now doing a lot better with this and owning my part and not hers. I sent her a letter and she accepted and read it.”Becoming memberShe joined after six months without seeing her daughter, with only short texts between them. Now they're talking on the phone, and she's learning to listen and hold space without over-apologizing or over-explaining.
Then one day, they met for lunch.
Carolyn hadn't seen her eldest daughter in seven years. Seven years of missed birthdays. Seven years of wondering if she would even recognize her on the street.
Inside Becoming, she began to see how her own upbringing, her divorce and the pain she had never processed had shaped the way she mothered. Not with bad intentions. With blind spots. She wrote a letter that named the impact instead of explaining it, and she didn't ask for a response.
At first there was silence. Then her daughter unblocked her. Family shared that the letter had landed well. This is where most mothers panic. She didn't. She stayed steady, gave space and trusted the timing.
Then one day, they met for lunch. They hugged. They talked for over an hour and a half. Her daughter said they would need to take it slowly, and Carolyn respected that completely.
Today they are rebuilding. Not perfectly. Consciously.
Then a handwritten letter arrived.
Her daughter had blocked her completely. No calls, no texts, no time with her grandchildren. In Becoming, Debby saw that she had focused on being right instead of being attuned. So she wrote gentle letters. Not to argue or explain. Just to share what she was learning. Two months in, she learned her daughter had read one. Soon after, a handwritten letter arrived, thanking her for the space and asking to begin again, slowly.
Not because her daughter changed first. Because she did.
On Christmas Day, a voice message.
For almost two years they had only exchanged carefully written letters, if anything. She began sending thoughtful, steady messages. No flooding, no guilt, no pressure. After months, her daughter shared the pain she had been carrying and said she could see a shift in her mother. Then on Christmas Day: “I was thinking about you today.”
Now they send voice messages back and forth. And it was her daughter who had recommended Becoming in the first place.
One week in, her daughter reached out.
Because of what she was already learning, she didn't rush in. She responded slowly and thoughtfully and didn't ask her daughter to explain what went wrong. She brought each message to the group and got clear guidance on how to answer.
Four months later, they're in regular contact. Because they both want to be.
She stopped asking who was right.
Instead of insisting her daughter's view was wrong, she began asking a different question. What happened, that she sees it this way? She wrote a note with no pressure and no demands. Her daughter answered honestly.
Their connection is growing. And she's growing with it.
We still argue sometimes, but I don't fall apart. I know how to repair quickly, stay calm and hold my truth without shutting her out or giving myself away.Becoming member

a letter from Hilary
The day my daughter slammed the door.
When I was growing up, a slammed door was practically the worst thing you could do in our house. It meant disrespect. It meant you had gone too far. Nobody ever had to explain that to me. I just knew.
Years later, my own daughter slammed her bedroom door. Before I had a single conscious thought, my body was already on its way up the stairs. My heart was pounding. My jaw was tight. I had the words ready, and they weren't even mine.
I stopped before the top step. I let the door be her anger. I let my own room be the place I found my calm. And when we were both ready, I went back and knocked.
That moment holds everything I teach. Not because I got it right. Because I finally saw it. The invisible pattern that had been handed to me, running in my body, about to be handed to her.
Here is what I see, over and over. None of it was taught on purpose. All of it was taught. How you handle conflict. How you receive hard feelings. Whether honesty feels safe. Your daughter learned it by watching you, the way you learned it by watching your mother.
I've been a licensed therapist for 17 years, and for the last six I've given my whole practice to this one relationship. I've sat with hundreds of women carrying the same quiet ache. They love their daughters completely. They've tried everything they know. And they still can't get past the wall. And what I’ve come to understand is that they aren't missing the right words. They're living inside a pattern they can't see yet.
Once you can see it, things begin to change, not overnight and not in a straight line, but in a way you can feel. The letter you write reads differently, the phone call sounds different, and your daughter feels it too, because it really is different to be with you.
That's why I created Becoming. So you don't have to carry this alone, late at night, rereading her last text, trying to understand what you missed. So someone who knows your story, week after week, can help you see what you can't see from inside it.
You are not the last link in the chain. You are the first author.

Hilary Mae, LPC · Founder, The Mother-Daughter Company
Hilary Mae, LPC
Hilary Mae is a licensed professional counselor with 17 years of clinical experience, and for the last six years she has devoted her work entirely to the relationship between mothers and daughters. She is the founder of The Mother-Daughter Company and has taught more than 12,000 students, and in 2024 she taught the first-ever course on the mother-daughter relationship at the Psychotherapy Networker Symposium. Her work has been featured in Business Insider, Vox and Everymom, she consulted on a highly rated series on Hulu, and she is currently writing a book on the mother-daughter relationship.
After years in practice, she kept seeing the same thing. Families were being told to give each other space, to wait it out, to simply move on, when what was actually keeping them apart was a set of patterns neither woman could see from inside the relationship. Patterns that had been handed down through generations of women who came before them.
That understanding became the foundation of her work and of the frameworks she has built to guide it, including the Mother-Daughter Reconnection Method™, the Hear Her Framework™ and the Emotional Repair Pathway™.
Hilary is known for helping mothers see what has been happening beneath the surface of their relationship in a way that finally makes sense, without blame and without shame, and for giving them the words and the steadiness to begin again. She brings that into Becoming herself every week, getting to know each woman's relationship so the guidance grows with her over time.
She is a daughter and the mother of a daughter, and she understands from both sides how much this relationship holds.
Choose how closely you want to work with Hilary.

Becoming is not for everyone.
This program is not therapy and is not a substitute for clinical mental health treatment.
If your daughter is navigating an active mental health crisis, addiction or a situation that requires clinical intervention, this may not be the right first step. Write to hello@hilarymae.com and Hilary will let you know if this is the right place for you.
Becoming is also not for mothers who are unwilling to look at their own patterns. This work begins with you, not with your daughter.
The questions mothers ask most.
Don't see yours? Write to hello@hilarymae.com and we'll answer personally.
What's the difference between Becoming and VIP?
Both paths give you the complete Becoming experience. All eight modules, weekly live coaching, Communication Reviews and the Becoming community for six full months.
VIP adds Hilary's eyes directly on your relationship. You begin with a private deep-dive session where you share your full story. The history, the conversations, the places you keep getting stuck. Hilary synthesizes everything she sees into your personalized Relationship Blueprint™, and then you have three private one-on-one calls to put it into practice.
If you want the teachings and the group, Becoming is your path. If you want Hilary to know your relationship specifically and guide you through it personally, VIP is where that happens.
What if my daughter won't talk to me?
You do not need your daughter to participate for this work to change things between you. When one woman in a relationship begins to understand the invisible dynamics running underneath it, the relationship begins to shift. Not because the other woman changed. Because the dynamic changed.
We're in contact, but it's tense. Is this for me?
Yes. Becoming is for every stage of distance, from tense and surface-level to complete silence. The work is the same regardless of where the relationship is right now.
Does my daughter need to join with me?
No. Becoming is designed for one woman to go through on her own. The shifts you make will be felt in the relationship whether or not your daughter is doing any work herself.
I'm already in therapy. Will this overlap?
Becoming is not therapy. It is coaching and education. Many members are in therapy alongside Becoming and find the two complement each other. If you have a question about whether both are right for you at the same time, write to hello@hilarymae.com.
Is it only for mothers of adult daughters?
No. Becoming is for mothers of daughters at any age, from the teen years to grown daughters with families of their own. The patterns underneath the relationship are the same, and the earlier you see them, the more you can change.
When does it start?
Your six months begin the day you join. Enrollment is open now.
When are the coaching calls?
Every week. Calls rotate between Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at different times each week, so there is always one that fits your schedule and time zone.
Every call is recorded and available to members the same day. If you can’t make it live, submit your question ahead of time and Hilary will answer it on the call.
What if I can't make the live calls?
Every call is recorded and available to members the same day. Submit your question ahead of time and Hilary will answer it on the call, so you still get coached even when life gets in the way.
What happens on a coaching call?
You bring whatever is live for you. A text you do not know how to answer, a visit that is coming up, a conversation that went wrong. Hilary coaches you personally. In a group of fewer than twelve women, there is always time for your situation.
If you feel the quiet pull, this is your Becoming.
The thread has been there all along. Between you and your mother, between you and your daughter, and between you and the woman you're ready to be. Let's pick it up together.
