A Private Podcast Collection

Why can the mother-daughter relationship feel so hard when you love each other so much?

I've spent sixteen years sitting with mothers and daughters as a therapist. In that time, I've learned that some of the most painful moments between them aren't caused by a lack of love.

They're caused by everything happening underneath it.

The mother who thinks she's helping and calls it protection.
The daughter who experiences that help as control.
The daughter trying to explain that it hurt her.
The mother hearing that she failed.

"I was only trying to help."

"But that's not how it felt to me."

Two women. One relationship. Completely different experiences of what's happening between them.

That's what Between Mothers & Daughters is about.

A private collection of episodes on the invisible dynamics between mothers and daughters.

Not communication tips. Not who's right and who's wrong.

The things happening between mothers and daughters that neither woman has ever been taught how to see.

Inside the Private Collection

These episodes are the conversations behind some of my most-seen content. The ones that have reached hundreds of thousands of women - not because they were surprising, but because they named something every mother and daughter already knew was happening and had never been able to say out loud.

Once you understand what's actually happening underneath your conversations, the relationship begins to feel different. Not because anything changes between you. Because you can finally see it.

Each episode gives you something specific to notice in your own relationship - a question to sit with, a moment to look for. Not a script. Not a list of things to say. A new lens. And once you have it, you cannot unsee it.

    About Hilary
    Hilary Mae

I'm Hilary Mae - founder of The Mother-Daughter Company and the creator of The Art of the Mother-Daughter Relationship™.

For sixteen years I worked as a therapist, but my practice was specific: adolescent girls and young women, ages twelve to twenty-five. And what I kept seeing, over and over, was that the girl on my couch would open up completely - her real feelings, her fears, the things she couldn't say at home - while her mother sat outside the door, waiting to be invited in.

Not because the mother didn't want to be there. Because her daughter didn't know how to let her in yet.

I watched mothers who loved their daughters deeply have no idea what was actually happening with them. And I watched daughters who needed their mothers more than they could say have no idea how to reach her.

That's when I stopped asking why the tools I used with families weren't working between mothers and daughters and started looking for what was actually happening in the space between them.

What I found became this work.

Today I work with adult daughters and mothers - including daughters who are now mothers themselves. Because the women I work with aren't just changing one relationship. They are changing what gets passed down. And that means they get to experience something different in every relationship that follows.

Love is never the question between mothers and daughters. It's always been there.

The question is how do I reach her. How do I let her in. How do I help her really see me.

That's what Between Mothers & Daughters is for.
